unlucky 777
November 27th, 2007
...
I’ve been told if you hit 777 on a slot machine, it’s about as good as it gets. I don’t know. I don’t gamble. What I do know is that Senate Bill 777, signed by Governor Schwarzenegger October 12 2007 is about as bad as it gets.
I read the first two paragraphs of the bill nodding and thinking to myself, “okay, okay, I agree with this.” What I didn’t notice, however, was that the first two paragraphs begin with “EXISTING law states that…” or “EXISTING law prohibits…” In other words, the purpose of the bill is to revise the very things I thought were just fine. Go figure.
Pre-sb777 law prohibited any discrimination based on “sex, ethnic group identification, race, national origin, religion, or mental or physical disability” in public schools. It also prohibited any teacher or school district from teaching or sponsoring and event that “reflects adversely” on any person or persons because of “race, sex, color, creed, handicap, national origin, or ancestry.” All pretty basic constitutional-type stuff.
Senate Bill 777 revises existing law to include “sexual orientation” and “all other characteristics contained in the definition of hate crimes…in the Penal Code.”
...To be continued.
